From Electronic Shelf Labels to Solar: i-Components Enters the Perovskite Race with Barrier Film Business
2026-10-20

Korean energy materials specialist i-Components is investing KRW 5.5 billion in a new barrier film production line, scheduled for completion in February 2027, to prepare capacity for perovskite solar cell commercialization. The company already supplies barrier film mainly for electronic shelf labels and has shipped perovskite samples to about 30 companies, plus space-grade samples to a global aerospace leader.

October 14 news: i-Components, a Korean specialist in energy materials, is strengthening its competitiveness around high-value-added barrier film. The company announced an investment of KRW 5.5 billion to build a new barrier film production line, with expansion targeted for completion in February 2027, preparing capacity for the commercialization wave of perovskite solar cells.

Barrier film relies on precision coating and deposition processes to block moisture and oxygen from penetrating into devices. i-Components currently supplies its barrier film mainly to electronic shelf label (ESL) customers and also serves customers across the display industry. Based on technology and project experience accumulated in displays and solar cells, the company is shifting its strategic focus to the new perovskite solar cell track.

Compared with barrier film used in electronic shelf labels, perovskite solar cells impose much stricter requirements in terms of larger format and higher performance. According to the company, a leading global customer it has long worked with is planning mass production, and the barrier film demand in the first year of mass production alone would be close to the entire supply area of i-Components' current ESL barrier film business, indicating considerable market growth potential.

i-Components has already provided perovskite solar cell barrier film samples to about 30 companies in Korea and overseas, while advancing product performance validation and specification iterations. Beyond the terrestrial photovoltaic market, the company also supplies multi-layer barrier film samples for space solar cells to a leading global aerospace company and is carrying out related testing and evaluation to address space application scenarios.

A company official said that i-Components is concentrating resources on technology development and equipment investment to respond to the perovskite cell market expected to grow rapidly from next year. Globally, very few manufacturers can both develop perovskite cell barrier film and supply it stably, and the company aims to seize the early market opportunity.

In terms of industry timing, the company judges that following the electronic shelf label market, the commercialization of perovskite solar cells will become an important turning point for its barrier film business. This production line expansion is precisely aimed at matching the large-scale mass production demand of future major customers, expanding capacity in advance and connecting the industry chain from sample validation to large-volume supply.
