E Ink (元太科技) has partnered with the advertising arm of JR Tokai Group to pilot full-color ePaper signage at Tokyo Station, a major railway hub in Japan.

The trial, conducted in collaboration with JR Tokai Agency (JTA), runs until March 2027. In selected areas of Tokyo Station, existing paper advertisement boards have been replaced with full-color ePaper displays powered by E Ink Spectra™ 6 technology. System integration and turnkey solutions are provided by AUO Display Plus and Sharp, respectively. The project will evaluate how full-color ePaper signage can accelerate the digital transformation of transit advertising while improving operational efficiency across Japan's busy railway system.

The specific installation locations are as follows: at the Yaesu South Exit, AUO Display Plus AecoPost 31.5-inch units and Sharp A2-size ePosters have been deployed; at the Nihonbashi Exit, AUO Display Plus AecoPost 31.5-inch units have been deployed.

Historical data shows that these areas see roughly 100,000 passengers daily, making them high-exposure, high-footfall benchmark locations well-suited to evaluating the performance of commercial full-color ePaper signage in transit advertising scenarios. Should the pilot meet its targets, JTA plans to accelerate assessments and consider deploying ePaper signage across other JR Tokai stations.

"This pilot once again demonstrates that ePaper can help transit advertising move toward a more sustainable path," said Hung Ji-mao, General Manager of E Ink. "We will continue working closely with our system integration partners to make ePaper signage a more competitive advertising media solution for the transportation industry."

Amid worsening labor shortages and the ongoing digitalization of advertising media, railway operators and their ad agencies are actively seeking digital alternatives to traditional paper posters. ePaper signage supports remote content updates and consumes power only when refreshing the display, significantly cutting the labor hours and maintenance costs associated with replacing paper ads while offering the convenience of digital management. It also reduces the resource waste and environmental burden of traditional paper advertising.
